IS IT EVER TOO LATE TO START ACTING?:

Danny Glover was not, like many actors who don’t achieve fame until later in life, someone who started doing background roles until breaking out in his 30’s. He worked in San Francisco as a city administrator working on community development and didn’t start training at the American Conservatory Theater until he was 31. He began taking small roles in plays and as extras in films like Escape From Alcatraz until quitting his job and moving to Los Angeles in his mid-30’s, where he landed his first significant role in Witness in 1985, which led to The Color Purple and Lethal Weapon in the next two years:

"Acting is a platform that can become a conveyer for ideas. Art is a way of understanding, of confronting issues and confronting your own feelings—all within that realm of the capacity it represents. It may have been a leap of faith for me, given not only my learning disability (dyslexia) but also the fact that I felt awkward. I felt all the things that someone that's 6′3″ or 6′4″ feels and with my own diminished expectations of who I could be [and] would feel. Whether it's art, acting or theater that I've devoted myself to I put more passion and more energy into it.”

Kathryn Joosten was born in Chicago in 1939. She worked for years as a psychiatric nurse, married a psychiatrist and raised two children, never thinking about acting. In 1980 at the age of 41, Joosten divorced her husband and decided to take a community theater program to pass the time, acting in small Chicago community shows at age 42. At the age of 52 after her children had grown, she moved to Florida and took some work as a street performer at Disney World. By the time she was 54 she’d moved to Hollywood, where she appeared in dozens of television shows in the 1990’s and 2000’s including Seinfeld, Roseanne, Home Improvement, Frasier, ER, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Drew Carey Show, Scrubs, The X-Files, Charmed, Will & Grace, Gilmore Girls, The Closer, The West Wing and many more. In 2005, at the age of 65, she won her first of two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama series for her recurring role on Desperate Housewives.

I was 15 when I had that idea, and my mom introduced me to Walter Alza. … I started taking private lessons every week, then I started meeting the class, the adult class. Then I started taking two classes per week, and sometimes three.

We congratulate Alex Ozerov from Alza Acting Studio on his new film, Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein, premiering on Netflix on July 16! Alex is second-billed under star David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) in a cast including Kate Berlant, Michael Lerner, and Alfred Molina!

When Alex Ozerov came to the studio, he was so shy and a bit afraid to speak that he didn’t even feel he could take a class without working in private lessons first. As he gained confidence and skills, he wrote down and practiced everything he was taught, working on his craft in his time off and devoting himself to study and improvement.

Working effectively on your craft can be excruciating at times. It can seem long and endless. Alex worked with the studio for four years before he got a major role. But each class and private you take will provide you with new skills and realizations about the craft of acting, like a new rung on a ladder. The more you work, the higher your ladder will reach, even if you can’t see the top of it as you build it. There is no magic formula that led to Alex’s eventual success, just the results of hard work. And if a kid from Russia unsure of himself and his language can reach those heights, anyone can.

Alex’s first film, Blackbird in 2012, premiered at TIFF and won the Festival award for Best Canadian Film. Since then, still taking classes and privates whenever he could, he landed roles in The Americans, Cardinal, Bitten, and just won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Lead Actor for PYOTR495.

His next series, Another Life, will also premiere on Netflix on July 25th, 2019.
